Note: We are no longer creating new versions of Rident because pfSense® now works on our servers “out of the box”.
The Yawarra Rident firewall and router software for embedded servers, is a modified version of the pfSense® software, optimised to suit our tiny computers.
Our Rident software is based on the pfSense® software and has one or more of these changes already made for you (depending on the specific board):
- The ethernet ports are pre-assigned
- It resets to our factory defaults (and you can set set your own defaults too)
- It doesn’t hang during boot (it already has the loader.conf.local file on both slices)
These minor but important tweaks allow you to get up and running even faster with our hardware.
It also includes five different coloured themes for the webGUI, so you can colour-code your servers, match your software with your company colours or show your support for your favourite sports team.
You can get Rident pre-installed at no additional cost when you order any of our servers or rackmount units.

Rident images
Rident is a modified version of the pfSense® software, optimised to suit our hardware.
The pfSense® software is a m0n0wall-derived operating system platform, with an easy-to-use interface. The pfSense® system is ideal for building firewalls, redundant servers and clustering solutions.
Our Rident images are based on the pfSense® software and include specific enhancements to suit our embedded servers, including the APU, ALIX, net5501 and net6501.
For full details of the configuration, please check the readme file (see below).
To create your own set of “factory defaults” please refer to the ‘yawarra_mfd.sh’ file (below).
(Note: Tested with pfSense®
versions 1.2.2 to 2.1.5)
For the standard pfSense® software release, please go to www.pfsense.org
Note: Rident requires a minimum of two network connections, so to use it with the ALIX 3, you’ll need to add a wireless card.

Questions?
Why did you make this change?
We have rebranded our modified version of the pfSense® software in order to comply with the pfSense® project licence terms.
You can read more about these changes in our news update.
How different is Rident from the pfSense® software?
Basically, Rident is the pfSense® software with a new name, a new look, and one or more of the tweaks listed above. That’s it.
We’re not software developers and we have no plans to be.
We just want to offer you the best possible version of this open-source firewall and router software, so you can get up and running faster.
So we’ll be keeping pace with the pfSense® software as it grows, and offering you our rebranded and tweaked Rident version of the software with each new release of the pfSense® software.
Please visit our software images page to download the latest version of the Rident software.
Will packages still work in Rident ?
Yes, they will.
Packages under Rident work exactly the same way as under the pfSense® system.
If you’ve been using packages in the pfSense® software, then you can keep doing exactly the same thing in the Rident software.
Simple.
Will updates work correctly?
Yes, they will.
We have worked hard to ensure that you can update Rident as easily as you can in the pfSense® system.
Our aim is to have rebranded and tweaked updates available for you within two weeks of a new release of the pfSense® software.
The exact timing will depend on how much the pfSense® software changes with each update.
Updates will be available from our update server at updates.ridentsoftware.com.au.
Important note
if you use the pfSense® update server instead of the Rident server to update your system, it will revert to the original pfSense® version of the software.
It will look funny until you change the theme, but it will retain your full configuration settings.
You will, however, lose the ability to make your own factory defaults.
Can I switch between pfSense® and Rident?
Yes, you can.
You are not locked in at any point to using one or the other.
Please look out for our tutorials that show you exactly how to change from one to the other.
Can you rebrand Rident for my business?
Absolutely!
We can use your business logo instead of our logo, and we can also do a custom colour if one of the five currently available Rident theme colours doesn’t suit.
Please contact us to discuss your options further.
